Kindergarten Science: How To Make Rock Candy

How to make rock candy 6

Max and I made rock candy this week.  It was really interesting watching the candy grow.  It was even better eating it!

Materials:How to make rock candy

2 cups of water

4 cups of sugar

Vanilla extract

Glass Jar

Wooden skewer

Clothes pin

Food coloring (optional)

Step 1:

Cut the sharp part of the skewer off.  Soak in water.  Roll the skewer in sugar and set aside to dry.

Step 2:

Boil the water.  Once boiling, pour one cup of sugar in at a time, stirring constantly.  Pour the next cup in once the sugar is completely dissolved.  The sugar-water solution is very hot.  Be very careful.

Step 3:

Once the four cups of sugar are completely dissolved remove from the stove top.  Pour one or two drops of the vanilla extract.  You can also use other flavored oils.  You can mix food coloring in it at this point.  Let mixture cool for 10-15 minutes.

Step 4:

After the mixture has cooled pour it into the glass jar.  Use the clothes pin to hold the skewer in the jar, leaving about an inch at the bottom.  Cover with the cheese cloth to prevent dust or dirt getting into the jar.

Step 5:

Observe each day the progress.  If you notice that there are no crystals forming within four hours, boil the mixture again and add more sugar.  You can let the crystals grow as much as you like, but make sure you take it out before they grow on the sides of the jar. Let dry.
