Babies And Constipation

Lucas has been constipated since he was 3 months old.   Many nights I’ve stayed awake with him rubbing his poor little belly.  I tried so many things and it would work for a short time, but he would always clog up again.  Babies have a tendency to not have a bowel movement everyday. This is normal.  When the bowel movement is hard, dry, and painful it is constipation.

Babies and Constipation

Remedies I have tried (after speaking with my doctor):

1. Warm baths, while rubbing is belly

2. Rubbing vaseline on his anus

3. Encouraging tummy time and crawling

4. Prune juice and water

5. Pureed prunes… lots and lots of pureed prunes

6. Pureed pears, peaches, and apricots (high in fiber)

7. Bicycling legs

8. Did not feed rice cereal

All of these remedies worked for a brief time, but Lucas always seemed to go right back to where he started.  After speaking with my doctor again we tried MiraLAX, one teaspoon in his bottle once a day.

Babies and Constipation 2

After 24 hours, it worked like a charm.  He no longer strained when doing his business and he is a happy boy.  And I am a happy and relieved mommy.

  1. Yep our oldest does the same thing. We actually gave our oldest Prune juice by the ML with a medicine dropper, just on it’s own. Or we would put 5 ML’s of Prune juice and mix it with his formula. For some reason MiraLAX does not help our son – and we’ve tried variations of this stuff with him. Blueberries are the key with him. Once they come in – they come right back out – and it takes whatever was clogging him up out with it.
