Walter The Farting Dog Teaches Tolerance And Acceptance

Walter the Farting Dog by William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray is a unique story that teaches children about tolerance.  It isWalter Review one of my son’s favorite books, because he thinks it is really gross (and he loves that).

Walter is adopted from the pound by Billy and Betty.  They love him, but their Dad has a different opinion.  Their Dad wants Walter to go back the pound.  Why?  Because Walter has the most rancid flatulence they have ever smelled.  In the end, Walter wins over everyone’s affections by saving them from burglars (with the help of his gas).

This is a great story that teaches children to not judge a book by its cover.  Everyone is different and our differences can add a lot to our relationship (in Walters case, he saved the day with his gas).

The pictures are very awkward and strange, but it fits the story.  I find myself laughing along with my son while reading it!

They gave Walter every kind of dog food.  He farted.  They tried him on cat food.  They gave him hot dogs, hamburgers, and lettuce and tomato sandwiches.

They gave him fried chicken.  The gave him rabbit food.  They made him a vegetarian.

“No matter what that dog eats, he turns it into farts,” roared Father.

Walter tries to change, but in the end, he can only be himself and his family loves him for it!

I love reading this to my son because the topic of farting makes him interested in reading and the book’s message is a great one:  Acceptance.  After my son and I finish reading it we talk about his friends and how they are different from each other.  He is beginning to see how those differences make for a better friendship!

  1. Yep, put “fart” in the title of a book and it will be a hit with young boys!! Glad to hear it has a great moral behind it.
