Darth Vader:Teaching Children How To Make The Right Decisions!

My Son Loves Dressing Up As Good and Bad Guys

My son became obsessed with watching each Star Wars movie.  He was riveted, soaking in each scene, all the while sword fighting with his dog.  And then the shocker came.  He would never be the same.

Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father.

But, Mom, how can he be Luke’s father?  He’s a bad guy!

It was a heart wrenching question.  There is a part of me that wants to protect my children from the real world.  Bad guys are just the super villains from the comics.  Moms, Dads, and everyone else, who are supposed to love you, are good guys.  But that is not always the case.

He is Luke’s father, Max, and he made poor choices.  He once was a little boy just like you.  He grew up and made choices that led him to become Darth Vader.

Silence.  The wheels were turning.  My son was starting to really think about complex ideas.  In fact, he brought it up over and over during the course of the week.

Couldn’t Darth Vader apologize for his choices and become good?

Would Luke have to forgive him?

Will Luke become just like him?

Does Darth Vader love Luke even though he is mean to him?

We spoke at great length.  My son was turning into a mini philosopher.  He began to think about  the choices he was making.  His teacher even commented on how helpful he was towards his friends.

It is amazing when you realize that your child is no longer a baby.  He is a boy (a little boy) who is beginning to make sense of his world.  I think every parent always wonders what their child will become. Who will they be when they grow up?  I’m no exception.  I want my son to be a good person, to make choices that help him, but also help others.  I think he is on his way.   I am proud of him.

Mom, do you think the decisions I will make will make me like Darth Vader?

Not in a million years, Max.

I am so proud of him.
